Lydia's License

I completed the pre-MSN phase of Marquette University's Direct Entry Nursing program in 2005. After an eight-month long campaign I was able to transfer my nursing license from Wisconsin to Mississippi. Most (if not all) other states should accept Marquette Direct Entry students for RN licensure as well. I explain it all below. To read the whole story click on this header.

About Me

Lydia Bertrand, RN
Mississippi, United States
I was part of the 6th cohort of the Direct Entry nursing program at Marquette University (2004-05). I left after the first 15 months of the program and ended up moving to Mississippi. The Mississippi Board of Nursing denied my initial application for a nursing license because Marquette does not provide Direct Entry students with graduation dates or any kind of degree or diploma at the end of the 15-month pre-MSN phase. Marquette DID provide the Wisconsin BoN with a graduation date for me, and even indicated on my Wisconsin license application that I had been awarded a BSN degree - this is why Wisconsin granted me a nursing license in the first place. In the end Marquette still refused to issue graduation dates or any kind of degree or diploma to DE students at the completion of the pre-MSN phase, but Wiscosnin BoN issued an interpretation of the "Certificate of Completion" that DE students get to actually legally be a form of a "Diploma of Graduation" under the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act 441.04. This document from the Wisconsin BoN could be used by DE students to obtain RN licensure in states other than Wisconsin.
